Urban Water Resources Development and Management Project in Western Teheran Capital Area, Islamic Republic of Iran

Population of Tehran capital area is 10 million at present, which is projected to increase to 17 million in the year 2020. Water demands for domestic and industrial uses and irrigated agriculture also will increase largely to support the increasing population, and as a result, serious water shortage problem will take lace in the capital area. In order to cope with this water shortage problem, the following water resources development and management master plan has been set up and proposed to Tehran Regional Water Board and Ministry of Energy.

-Review of existing limited surface and ground water resources and their available water potential in the western capital area.
-Water diversion plan from the Almout and Taleghan rivers in the Elburzu mountain area to the western capital area by means of dam and long distance tunnel.
-Groundwater development plan to increase the available amount by underground dam and recharging pond and wells.
-Water re-use plan through treating the sewage water in Teheran and conversion to irrigation water.
-Integrated water management plan to monitor, evaluate and control the watershed, riverflow, reservoir operation, water allocation and distribution, irrigation water use at on farm level, groundwater, water quality, etc.
