Haouz Region Decentralized Rural Electrification Project, Kingdom of Morocco
(1996|1997)
Haouz region is located in the Atlas mountain range which runs across the southern part of Morocco. The region is very remote economically as well as culturally from the developed central plain area. Around 8,000 Berbere tribe families composed of 120 villages are forced to live in self-sustenance with agriculture/livestock raising and they are isolated from the national electric grid due to higher electrification cost to the region. It is a national high priority to improve such isolated people's living conditions.
In order to realize such needs, the decentralized rural electrification plan utilizing the renewal energies such as solar energy and micro hydropower was formulated. This project is a typical remote electrification plan combining the rural agriculture and the renewal energies which are favorable to the earth.
