West Africa
The Project for Development of Irrigation Facilities, Republic of Guinea
(1983|1984)
Although the country is one of the rain-richest in West Africa (the precipitation exceeds 4,000 mm/year in some areas), the rain is concentrated during the 6 months in the wet season, and it hardly rains in the rest of the year. As the irrigation facilities were practically non-existent, agriculture in the dry season was dormant. The potential of irrigation was high, because there are many perennial rivers in the country such as the Niger. 77 sets of portable pump irrigation facilities were designed and supplied considering the available infrastructure of the country.
